Edited copies for FOI releases
When you release a document with parts deleted, the deletions have to hold. AusRedact looks for personal details, lets you box anything else, and burns every box into a copy that cannot be uncovered.
An example briefing note. The officer name, direct line, email, the complainant name, address and mobile number, and the signature are each highlighted, then blacked out.
Built for edited copies
Section 22 of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) lets an agency give access to an edited copy, with exempt or irrelevant material deleted. The state and territory information access laws work in a similar way.
You make the decisions. AusRedact does the deleting, and makes sure it cannot be undone: every page is rebuilt as an image with your boxes burnt in, then checked before you can download it.
- Names
- Of staff, third parties and members of the public, flagged by the AI check.
- Phone numbers and emails
- Looked for by their shape, on every page.
- Addresses and signatures
- Flagged by the AI check, including signatures on letters and forms.
- Identifiers
- TFNs, Medicare, licence, passport, Centrelink and other Australian numbers, matched by pattern.
- Your own terms
- A name, a file number or a street. Type it into "Redact every occurrence of" and each place we find it is boxed.
What to know first
Better to know before you plan a release around it.
- The boxes are plain black
- AusRedact does not label a box with the exemption that applies. Record the provisions in your decision letter or schedule of documents.
- It is not for security classified material
- AusRedact has not been IRAP assessed. Use it only for material your agency allows to be processed by a commercial cloud service.
- The released file is images only
- That is what makes the redaction permanent, but it also means the file is not searchable and a screen reader cannot read it. If you publish releases on a disclosure log, you may need an accessible version too.
- Each document has a page limit
- Up to 300 pages each, and up to 20 documents in one order. Split a larger release into parts, or convert emails to PDF first. Word documents (.docx) can be uploaded as they are.
Your documents are processed and stored in Australia and deleted within 24 hours of upload, or as soon as you press Delete now. See where your data goes.
