Questions and answers

What it takes, what it looks for, what it costs, and what happens to your documents.

Using AusRedact

What files can I upload?

PDF, Word (.docx), JPG and PNG files, up to 40 MB and 300 pages. Scanned pages and phone photos work too: we read the text on them first.

Old Word .doc files and iPhone HEIC photos are not supported. Save them as .docx, PDF or JPG first.

Can I upload several documents at once?

Yes. Choose up to 20 documents together and they become one order, up to 1,000 pages and 400 MB in total. Each document gets its own free preview, review and download.

You pay for the order in one go, at 15c a page. The $1.50 minimum applies once to the whole order, not to each document, so two short letters cost $1.50. One tax invoice covers the order.

Download all saves every finished copy in one ZIP file, built in your browser, and Delete all now removes the whole order.

What happens to a Word document?

We convert it to PDF on our servers in Australia before we look for anything. The layout can differ slightly from Word, so check every page in the preview.

You always download a redacted PDF. A Word file cannot carry the guarantee that nothing hidden survives, so we never give one back.

The price comes from the page count after conversion, and you see it before you pay. If a Word document cannot be converted, you are not charged.

Why was my Word document turned away?

To keep conversion safe, we do not open Word files that contain macros, a password, links to outside files or templates, embedded objects such as the spreadsheet behind a chart, embedded fonts, or images in unusual formats.

Save the document as a PDF from Word, then upload the PDF instead.

My PDF has a password. What do I do?

Remove the password and upload it again. AusRedact cannot open a password-protected PDF, and will tell you so straight after you upload it.

Do I need an account?

Not to redact one document. Your job is linked to the browser you started it in.

You only need an account to buy and use a page pack. You sign in with a link we email you, so there is no password to remember.

Will it find everything?

No software finds everything, so you check every page before you download. AusRedact shows you what it found, you turn findings on or off, draw your own boxes, and confirm you have reviewed every page.

It is built for Australian documents, so it knows the shape and check digits of numbers like TFNs, Medicare numbers and ABNs.

Can I turn the AI check off?

Yes. The AI check looks for names, addresses, signatures and faces. You can switch it off for any document before you pay. The pattern check for numbers still runs.

If the AI check is off, skipped or fails, the review screen says so plainly, so you know to look for those details yourself.

Can I black out my own words?

Yes. Type a name, a file reference or any other words into "Redact every occurrence of" and each place we find them is boxed for you to check. You can also draw a box anywhere by hand.

Why can I not select text in the redacted file?

Because there is no text left in it. AusRedact rebuilds each page as an image with the boxes burnt in, so nothing is hidden underneath. That is what makes the redaction permanent.

Pages are rebuilt at 150 dots per inch, which reads and prints clearly.

Pricing and payment

How much does it cost?

15c a page, with a $1.50 minimum per order, GST included. A single upload is an order of one. A 20-page document costs $3.00. There is no subscription.

$1.50 is 10 pages. If you pay by card for fewer than 10 pages, the unused pages are added to your page balance. Sign in with the email you paid with to use them. They expire 12 months after you pay, like page packs. Pages paid for with a pack have no minimum.

Page packs bring the rate down to as little as 8c a page.

What do I get free?

We check the first 10 pages of any document for Australian identifiers free, and show you what we found with the price for the whole document. If you stop there, you pay nothing.

How do I pay?

By card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, through Stripe. Or with pages from a pack. You get a tax invoice by email.

What if something goes wrong?

If a document fails after you pay, or its redacted file fails our final check, its pages go back to your page balance. This is the same for card and pack payments. The rest of the order is not affected.

If every document in a card payment fails, we refund the whole card payment automatically and remove any leftover pages from it that you have not used. You can also email us to ask for a card refund for a failed document instead. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected.

If a payment reaches us that we cannot use, you get a full refund automatically. For anything else, email us and we will sort it out.

How long do page packs last?

12 months from the day you buy them. Use the pages across as many documents as you like in that time. Pages left over from a small card order expire the same way. If your account is closed, we refund unexpired unused pack pages pro rata.

Privacy and security

Where are my documents processed?

In Australia. Your documents are processed and stored on Microsoft Azure in Australia East (New South Wales). The AI check runs on Amazon Bedrock in Sydney and Melbourne only.

Payments go through Stripe, which may process your payment details overseas. It never sees your document.

How long do you keep my documents?

Your original, the redacted copy and everything made from them are deleted within 24 hours of upload, or as soon as you press Delete now. A check runs every 5 minutes to remove anything past its time.

Do you store my file name or the text of my document?

No file names, ever. Your browser names the download from its own copy. Our database never holds your document text: findings are stored as box positions and labels only. The text we read from your pages is kept with the job so searches are fast, and deleted with it.

Do you train AI on my documents?

No. Amazon Bedrock does not keep the page images it checks or use them to train models, and neither do we.

Can your staff see my documents?

There is no staff tool for viewing documents, and we never ask you to send one. Our admin access needs multi-factor sign-in.
